Overnight care

Someone awake, so you can finally sleep.

The falls, the wandering, the four trips to the bathroom — almost all of it happens after dark. Overnight care puts a trained caregiver in the house from bedtime to morning, so the person you love is safe and the rest of the family stops running on three hours of sleep.

What is overnight care?

Overnight care is non-medical in-home care through the night, usually around 10pm to 6am, so an older adult is not alone between bedtime and morning. In Las Cruces, Personal Touch Home Care staffs both awake overnight shifts and sleep shifts — helping with bathroom trips, repositioning, wandering, medication reminders and nighttime confusion — so the family can sleep through the night.

The nights are where families break first.

Daytime is manageable. Someone checks in, meals get handled, there is light in the house and other people awake. Then it gets dark, and the same person who managed fine at 2pm is disoriented at 2am, trying to get to the bathroom alone in a house they cannot see clearly.

So an adult daughter starts sleeping with her phone on the pillow. A husband stops sleeping in his own bed. Someone gets up four times a night for months, goes to work exhausted, and calls it normal. That is the point most families reach before they call us — not a crisis, just years of accumulated exhaustion.

Overnight care exists to give that back. Someone else is awake and responsible from bedtime to morning, and the family sleeps.

What an overnight caregiver actually does

Through the night, in the home:

  • Helps with bathroom trips safely, so nobody walks to the bathroom alone in the dark
  • Repositions someone who cannot turn themselves, to prevent stiffness and pressure sores
  • Redirects wandering gently and keeps exterior doors monitored
  • Provides medication reminders for scheduled overnight doses
  • Responds to confusion, sundowning and nighttime agitation without escalating it
  • Changes bedding and clothing after an accident, quietly and without embarrassment
  • Helps with the transition to morning — getting up, dressed, and started on the day
  • Tells you what actually happened overnight, rather than leaving you to guess

Awake overnight or sleep shift

Two different services. Most families are not sure which they need, and that is a normal thing to be unsure about.

Awake overnight

The caregiver is up the whole shift. Right for frequent bathroom trips, wandering, dementia-related night waking, or anyone who cannot be left unattended for an hour.

Sleep shift

The caregiver sleeps in the home and gets up when needed. Right when the nights are mostly quiet but nobody should be alone in the house.

Not sure yet

Then say that on the phone. We will ask what the last two weeks of nights looked like and tell you which shift the situation calls for — including if it is neither.

Overnight care in Las Cruces, at the hours nobody else wants to cover

Overnight is the shift most agencies quietly avoid. It is harder to staff and harder to keep staffed, so families here are often told daytime hours only, or offered nights that get cancelled the week they need them.

We staff overnight shifts across Las Cruces, Mesilla and Doña Ana County, in English and Spanish. It is one of the reasons families find us. When you call, you reach our Las Cruces team — not a national call center reading from a script about coverage in a city they have never been to.

Questions families ask about overnight care

Does the caregiver stay awake all night?

That depends on which shift you book. An awake overnight caregiver stays up the entire night and is available the moment something happens. A sleep shift means the caregiver sleeps in the home and gets up when needed. Awake overnight costs more because it is a full working shift. Tell us what the nights actually look like and we will tell you honestly which one the situation needs.

What time does an overnight shift start and end?

Most families book roughly 10pm to 6am, but the hours are yours to set. Some start at 8pm so someone is there through the evening restlessness, and some run to 8am so there is help with breakfast and morning medication reminders. We build the shift around when the hard part of the night actually begins.

Can we book overnight care for just a few nights?

Yes. Overnight care is often used short term — the first week home after a hospital stay, while a family caregiver travels, or during a stretch when someone is unusually unsteady. There is no requirement to commit to a schedule you do not need.

Is overnight care medical care?

No. Personal Touch Home Care is a non-medical agency. An overnight caregiver assists with bathroom trips, repositioning, medication reminders, and safety — not nursing, wound care, injections or anything requiring a licensed clinician. If skilled nursing is needed overnight, that is a home health agency, and we will say so.

Personal Touch Home Care provides non-medical in-home care. Overnight caregivers assist with safety, mobility, personal care and medication reminders. They do not provide nursing, wound care or any service requiring a licensed clinician.
