Respite care

You are allowed to rest.

Most of the care in this county is given by a daughter, a wife, or a husband who never planned on it. It works until it doesn't. Respite care is coverage for the hours you need to be a person again — and it is not a failure to use it.

What is respite care?

Respite care is temporary in-home care that gives a family caregiver a break. A trained caregiver takes over the routine — meals, bathing, medication reminders, supervision — for a few hours, an overnight, a weekend, or longer. In Las Cruces, Personal Touch Home Care provides scheduled or short-notice respite so families can rest, work, or travel.

What respite coverage looks like

A few hours at a time

Enough to go to your own doctor, get a haircut, run the errands you keep postponing, or sit somewhere quiet without listening for a sound in the next room.

Overnight relief

A caregiver stays awake and on duty overnight so you can sleep straight through — often the single biggest thing that keeps a family caregiver going.

Weekends and vacations

Multi-day coverage for a trip, a wedding, a funeral, or a week you promised yourself two years ago. We plan the handoff in detail before you leave.

Coverage when you get sick

Caregivers get the flu too. We take short-notice calls and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff it, instead of leaving you waiting.

Dementia and behavior experience

Sundowning, repetition, wandering risk, and refusal are familiar to our caregivers. You should not have to explain the whole disease before you can leave the house.

A written handoff

Medications, routines, triggers, favorite chair, what calms them down. We write it down once, so every caregiver who walks in already knows.

Who this is usually for

Adult children caring for a parent while working, spouses caring for a spouse, and families who are past the point of exhaustion but have not yet said it out loud. Respite is also how many families try in-home care before committing to a regular schedule.

Common questions

How much notice do you need for respite care?

More notice means better matching, but we take short-notice requests and will tell you plainly whether we can cover it. Call (575) 639-3341 and we will check availability while you are on the phone.

Can respite care be scheduled every week?

Yes, and standing weekly respite works better than emergency respite. A recurring block — every Tuesday afternoon, or every other weekend — lets your loved one build a relationship with the caregiver and lets you plan your life around it.

Will you take my mother to her appointments while I'm away?

Yes. Transportation, appointment attendance, and a summary of what the doctor said are part of the coverage. We can also update you by phone or text on whatever schedule you want while you are gone.
