Buying back the hours you cannot afford to lose.

The maths people avoid doing: what your leave is actually worth, and what a caregiver costs for the same block of time.

How do people manage caregiving and a full-time job?

By buying back the specific hours that collide with work rather than buying general help. The three that collide hardest are medical appointments, the morning routine, and the weekend. Handing over appointments alone frequently saves half a day of leave each time, which is usually the first paid hour that visibly pays for itself. Start where the conflict actually is rather than spreading hours thinly across the week.

Do the arithmetic once

Most working caregivers never actually price what they are spending. A single specialist appointment can cost half a day of leave, and there are several a month. Add the mornings you arrive late and the afternoons you leave early, and the annual figure is usually startling.

Set that against the cost of covering the same blocks. For a lot of families the appointment cover alone is close to cost-neutral once leave, fuel and the stress of asking a manager again are counted.

There is a harder version of this too. People lose jobs over caregiving, or turn down promotions, or drop to part time and never get back. That cost does not show up in a monthly comparison and it is frequently the largest one.

Where the hours do the most for someone working

In rough order of return:

  • Medical appointments. The single biggest leave consumer, and easy to hand over completely
  • Mornings. Bathing, dressing, medication and breakfast, done before you would have arrived
  • Weekends. The days that quietly consume the only time you had off
  • The specific days you cannot move — a standing meeting, a shift you cannot swap
  • Evenings, if that is when things fall apart and you are still at work
  • Errands and shopping, which eat lunch breaks and Saturday mornings
  • Overnight, if you are arriving at work having barely slept

Personal Touch Home Care provides non-medical in-home care. Our caregivers assist with daily living, safety and companionship. They do not provide nursing, wound care, injections, physical therapy or any service requiring a licensed clinician. If that is what is needed, it is a home health agency, and we will tell you so.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to just take the leave?

Sometimes, for a one-off. Rarely, once it is every month and your leave has run out. Price it against what covering the same block costs and decide from the real number rather than a feeling.

Can we book only the days I cannot cover?

Yes. Uneven schedules are normal — two mornings and a Saturday is a perfectly ordinary arrangement.

What about short-notice, like when I get called into work?

Ask. Short notice is normal in this work and we will give you a straight yes or no the same day rather than leave you waiting.

I feel like I should be doing this myself.

Nearly everyone does. The thing worth weighing is that losing your job or your health helps nobody, least of all the person you are caring for.
